Find the Right Counsellor
The right counsellor is someone you can feel comfortable being yourself with.
Finding a counsellor isn't only about credentials or choosing someone who works with the right concern.
It's also about the relationship.
You may want someone who is practical and direct. You may want more space to slow down and explore things. You may connect with someone who shares some of your experiences or perspectives, or you may simply want someone who listens in a way that feels genuine.
There isn't one counsellor who is right for everyone.
At Sholinder Counselling Collective, our counsellors have different backgrounds, experiences, and ways of working. We want you to find the person who feels like the best fit for what you're looking for.
FAQs
-
You don't need to know exactly what you're looking for.
You might start by thinking about what feels most important to you in a counsellor.
Maybe you want someone who:
Has experience with the things you're going through
Takes a practical approach
Gives you space to explore and reflect
Is comfortable talking about difficult or sensitive topics
Understands the stage of life you're in
Brings a particular therapeutic approach
Shares aspects of your identity or lived experience
Has experience working with a particular community
Simply feels like someone you could imagine talking to
Sometimes you know from reading a profile. Sometimes you don't know until you've had a conversation.
Both are completely okay.
-
Not necessarily.
Experience with a particular concern can be important, especially when you're looking for support around something specific.
But counselling is also about how your counsellor understands you, how you work together, and whether their approach fits what you need.
You may also be dealing with several things at once.
You don't have to reduce yourself to one concern when choosing a counsellor.
If you're unsure who might be the best fit, we're happy to help you think it through.
-
That can matter.
For some people, it feels important to work with someone who understands part of their identity, community, culture, family experience, or stage of life in a personal way.
For others, it isn't something they're looking for.
There is no right answer.
Our counsellor profiles are there to help you get a sense of who each person is, what they work with, and how they approach counselling.
If a particular perspective or experience is important to you, you're welcome to ask about it.
-
You don't have to choose on your own.
If you're unsure which counsellor might be the best fit, tell us a little about what you're looking for.
We can help you think about which counsellor's experience and approach might line up with your needs.
And if your first choice doesn't feel like the right fit once you start, that's okay too.
Finding the right person can take a little time.
-
You may already know what doesn't work for you.
Maybe you felt like you weren't being listened to. Maybe the approach felt too clinical, too passive, too structured, or simply not like you.
That experience can be useful information.
You can tell your next counsellor what you want to be different.
We also encourage you to ask questions before committing to ongoing counselling. The consultation is a chance for both of us to get a sense of whether the fit feels right.
-
We think it does.
Research consistently points to the therapeutic relationship as an important part of counselling. But you don't need to have a particular kind of relationship with your counsellor for counselling to work.
What matters is that you feel able to communicate honestly, ask questions, disagree when you need to, and work together toward what matters to you.
-
Sometimes a counsellor and client simply don't click.
That doesn't mean counselling isn't right for you.
You might realize you want a different approach, a different personality, or someone with a different area of experience.
It's okay to say so.
If another counsellor within the Collective seems like a better fit, we can talk about that. And if we think another service would better meet your needs, we'll be honest about that too.
Our goal isn't to convince you to work with a particular counsellor.
It's to help you find support that feels right for you.
